How to know if it is time to reduce swaddling for your baby?

Maximum Age To Swaddle Baby

The truth is that no one will know how long does your baby needs to be swaddled. Some baby stop swaddling at the mere age of 3 months. One research shows that on average babies stop swaddling at around 5-6 months old. However there are also many cases where swaddling can last up till 7,8 or 9 months. There is no fixed guide, all babies are different, it all depends on your babies. In the later section we will teach you to look out for the signs that your baby may not need to be swaddled anymore.

How long can you swaddle a baby per day?

For newborn up to the age of 1-1.5 month you can swaddle the baby for a longer duration. You can even keep the baby in the swaddle for the whole day, only taking them out when you need to change their diapers. etc. Baby at that age feels more comfortable sleeping in a swaddle as it keeps them warm and comfortable. When they are wrapped up in a swaddle, it gives them a feeling as though they are back in their mother’s womb.

For newborn after the age of 1-1.5 months onward till about 3 months you can slowly reduce the time that the baby spend in the swaddle. Take them out to allow them to acclimatize with the surrounding slowly. Be patience, it takes time. You may notice if your baby is too cold by touching his hands or them turning a little blue. Newborn babies have hard time adjusting their body temperature or keeping themselves warm. Research shows that most baby need at least 1 additional layer of clothing more than grown-ups. Thus when you find that they are cold place them back into the swaddle to keep them warm. It ensures that they are comfortable and healthy.

For baby from age 3 months to 6 months.  Try to swaddle the baby only when they are sleeping. This is because the baby have already got used to being outside the mother’s womb. Let your baby out of the swaddle during the day and swaddle them at night. You may also notice that you baby may start to show signs that they do not want to be swaddled anymore. However most babies as mentioned uses the swaddle up to the age of 5-6 months, some even longer. We will tell you the signs in more details later.

Swaddling journey ending? Learn about the signs.

Babies should never be sleeping on their tummy. The most important sign to look out for is when you notice that the baby turn to lie on his/her tummy consistently when swaddling. It is a clear and strong sign to show that it is time that your babies swaddling journey is ending soon.

Second sign

Newborn Moro Reflexes can last up till the age of 4-6 months and most babies do not outgrow it until 5-6 months of age. It all depends on your baby. So monitor and do not stopping the swaddle too early; if your baby’s Moro reflex is still strong, she may startle herself awake at night and during naps. Thus this gives you a benchmark of the time when signs to stop swaddling may come in.

Your baby is starting to break free from the swaddle. Being able to break free once or twice rarely isn’t the sure sign. However if you notice that your children consistently breaking free from the swaddle it could be a sign that the swaddling journey may be over soon. For e.g. You may consistently find your baby’s hand getting out of the swaddle.
